In the frame of the upcoming Plastic Electronics Conference in Dresden, Photonics21 will conduct an FP7 ICT proposeres event on organic, flexible and large area electronics and photonics. The event will be held on the 20 October from 18.00 - 21:00.

The European Commission highlights the value of OLAE and seeks to encourage and to support further engineering innovation. The FP7 proposers event will review the research position and expose the current research issues such as: reliability, stability, device performance and architecture as well as heterogeneous integration.

The upcoming ICT Call will seek proposals for research and innovation which aim at the full technology chain for OLAE and Smart Textiles, an increased European competitiveness and the accelerated emergence of new devices, and products in key applications and the creation of new markets.

Attendees will be encouraged to study the new ICT 2011-2013 Work Programme, particularly Objective ICT-2011.3.6 on Flexible, Organic and Large Area Electronics and Photonics with the purpose to participate in research projects which will result from the upcoming proposals round. Potential coordinators, project proposers or even small consortia seeking to complete the setting are invited to present their pre-proposals in poster format at the meeting.

During the proposers event there will be ample opportunity for representativeas of companies, research institutes and academia to present an outline of their proposals to stimulate further discussions and consortium formation.

Dr. John Magan, Deputy Head of the Photonics Unit from the EC Directorate General for Information Society and Media, will open the event and introduce the ICT Work Programme 2011-2013 as well as the expected type and content of proposals. There will be ample opportunity for networking and sharing of ideas in public or in private.

Attending the Proposers Event is free of charge and is only possible in combination of attending the Plastic Electronics 2010 Conference & Exhibition.

Proposers are kindly invited to develop a poster [preferably DIN A0 format] of the project pre-proposal, presenting the main topic area and objectives of the project proposal in bullets.

The next Photonics21 work group 7 workshop on training & education will be held on the 28 October 2010 in Paris. It will take place in the frame of the EOS Annual Meeting. We will provide you soon any further information and publish the agenda. You are invited to mark this date in your diary.

Photonics21 work group 3 members are invited to join a concertation meeting which will be held on the 5th November 2010 in the VUB in Brussels on behalf of Photonics21, Photonics4Life and with support from OPTBIO.

The purpose of this event is to bring together on-going EU projects on biophotonics and other interested stakeholders to present their achievements, to create a shared vision concerning the needs for biophotonics in Europe and to discuss the scope of actions which might be covered by an ERA-NET Plus on biophotonics. In addition to that, there will be a presentation on the upcoming photonics calls which might be of interest to those considering new biophotonics proposals.

The meeting is planned to start at 10.00 am.

About 200 Mio. Euros Funding foreseen for Photonics and Organic Electronics

The DG Information Society and Media of the European Commission just published a newsletter which lists the Photonics & Organic Electronics related calls from the ICT Work Programme 2011 / 2012.

More than 200 Mio. Euros are foreseen as funding addressing three dedicated objectives: Two are part of the ICT Challenge 3 (3.5 resp. 3.6.) and one is included in the ICT part of the “Factories of the Future” (FoF) Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

The European Commission Directorates General for research, information Society and Media, Energy, and for Mobility and Transport will held a joint Information Day on Research PPPs which will take place on the 9 July 2010 in the Charlemagne Building, rue de la Loi 170, Brussels. The event aims to inform you about the progress regarding the research PPPs and the Cross-thematic Coordinated Calls related to them. Participants can get in contact with other potential proposers and partners. You also have the possibility to present your own project idea. The European Initiative on Nanotechnology Nanofutures was officially launched on the 15 and 16 June 2010 in Gijón, Spain. Paolo Matteazzi, Chair of NANOfutures gave the opening address to the more than 450 participants. Christos Tokamanis, Head of Unit “Nano and converging Sciences and Technologies”, of the European Commission DG Research, introduced the European Technology Integration platform in nanotechnology NANOfutures and its overall aims and direction to the audience.

The project is run by D’Appolonia, Nanofutures Association Asbl. and Fundación Prodintec. The main objective of the cross ETP platform NANOfutures is the development and dissemination of an integrated 10 year Industrial and Research Roadmap for Nanotechnology in Europe with a detailed medium term implementation plan. Furthermore, NANOfutures aims to create synergies among European Technology Platforms related to nanotechnology, to identify key strategic nanotechnology nodes which address cross-sectorial issues.

The General Assembly of NANOfutures is coordinated through the NANOfutures Steering Committee which is composed of 11 ETPs representatives and 10 Working Group Chairs. Photonics21 is part of the Steering Committee.

As part of the initiative, Photonics21 can actively influence future photonics research and innovation in Europe which is related to nanotechnology.

 Photonics21 Vice president Giorgio Anania will represent Photonics21 in the High Level Industry Advisory Group on Key Enabling Technologies. This advisory group has been set up by the European Commission in order to provide strategic advice to the five Key Enabling Technologies photonics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, advanced materials and micro- and nanoelectronics. These Key Enabling Technologies have been designated by the European Commission in September 2009. The High Level Industry Advisory Group is composed of 27 members. A first meeting is planned to take place within the next month.
